Put Distant Kitchens on your phone

Distant Kitchens doesn’t need an app store. Add it to your home screen and it opens full-screen with its own icon, just like an app. An app-store version is on our roadmap; until then, this takes about 30 seconds.

iPhone and iPad

Use Safari. Other iPhone browsers may not offer this.

  1. Open Safari, go to your family’s Distant Kitchens address (the link in your invite email) and sign in.
  2. Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow pointing up). On iPhone it’s at the bottom of the screen; on iPad it’s at the top. If you don’t see it, tap the ••• button first.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add. You can keep the name “Distant Kitchens”.
  5. Open Distant Kitchens from the new icon on your home screen.

Android

Use Chrome. Samsung Internet works too.

  1. Open Chrome, go to your family’s Distant Kitchens address (the link in your invite email) and sign in.
  2. Tap the menu (three dots, top right).
  3. Tap Install app. If you only see Add to Home screen, tap that instead and then Install.
  4. Tap Install to confirm. An icon appears on your home screen.
  5. Open Distant Kitchens from that icon.

Samsung Internet: tap the menu, then Add page to, then Home screen.

You may also see an Install app button inside Distant Kitchens, under More ▾, after you’ve used the site a little.

If something doesn’t look right

  • I don’t see “Install app” or “Add to Home Screen”. Make sure you’re in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android), not inside another app’s built-in browser, and not in a private or incognito window.
  • It’s already installed. Look for the Distant Kitchens icon on your home screen or in your app list.
  • Computers. Chrome and Edge show an install icon in the address bar. Firefox on a computer doesn’t offer installing.
  • Working offline. Pages you’ve already opened, Cook Mode and your shopping list keep working with a weak connection.
  • Shared phone? Press Log out when you finish so the next person can’t see your recipes.
